San Diego Immunization Coalition ~ SDIC

The San Diego County Immunization Coalition (SDIC) is a local coalition of approximately 150 partner organizations working with the San Diego Immunization Branch (SDIB) of the County’s Health and Human Services Agency. Coalition member’s work together to identify and develop strategies to raise immunization (IZ) coverage for all residents of San Diego County.

The San Diego County Immunization Coalition (SDIC) is a local coalition of approximately 150 partner organizations working with the San Diego Immunization Branch (SDIB) of the County’s Health and Human Services Agency. Coalition member’s work together to identify and develop strategies to raise immunization (IZ) coverage for all residents of San Diego County.

SDIC partner activities are numerous and varied, allowing each organization the opportunity to create its own venues and ways to promote Immunizations. Some of these activities include hosting health fairs, holding flu vaccine clinics, conducting immunization presentations, and inviting Branch health educators to present or conduct immunization training. Members also distribute IZ materials and resources, provide referrals to health care resources for immunizations, and perform immunization record assessments. They educate clients, staff or customers on immunization issues.

History of the SDIC
The San Diego Immunization Coalition (SDIC), formerly (I-3) has been active since 1992, making it one of the oldest continuously operating immunization coalitions in the nation. The County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency’s Immunization Branch has historically been the lead agency for the coalition, providing staff support and State and local resources. The SDIC includes all partners in the Coalition, is led by two co-chairs selected every two years from and by the membership.

The current co-chairs are Rachel Hamilton, Health Educator of the San Diego County YMCA Childcare Resource Service and Tania Farley, Manager, Education and Outreach, of the UCSD San Diego Immunization Partnership.

The SDIC Strategic Three Year Goals (FY 2010-2012) are as follows:

  • Improve perceptions of vaccines
  • Increase immunization rates across the life span
  • Advocate for policy changes that promote immunizations
  • Achieve a viable and vibrant coalition

The Advocacy Committee will have their standing meeting on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 2:00 pm -3:30pm at the COBBH-CDPH office in Mission Valley.

SDIC Partner Organizations
The following types of organizations support the activities of SDIC and the San Diego Immunization Branch (SDIB) in a variety of ways.

  • Private and Public Health Care Providers
  • Government Agencies
  • Hospitals Social Programs (eg. WIC Program, Headstart)
  • Vaccine Manufacturers
  • Health Insurance Companies
  • Schools
  • Colleges and Universities
  • Community based organizations
  • Long Term Care Facilities
  • Private Citizens
  • Civic and professional organization representatives (eg. Rotary clubs, nurses associations)

Partner activities include: attending quarterly SDIC General Meetings participating in committee work groups and, most important, implementing immunization-focused activities through their organizations and the community.

Ad Hoc Commitees
The SDIC will convene Ad Hoc Committees as needed to address specific immunization issues, special projects or events. Email announcements will be sent out to the SDIC membership regarding the formation of Ad Hoc Committees when needed.
